Yesterday, Meryl has (finally) been a guest at the UMass Lowell’s Chancellor’s Speaker Series. Her appearance was originally planned for February 05, but got postponed. She answered questions, reflected on her storied career, offered advice for breaking into films, posed for countless photos, pulled an April Fools’ prank before a crowd of 3,600 and raised more than $230,000 for scholarships. Streep held court before a capacity crowd at the Tsongas Center in an event billed as “A Conversation with Meryl Streep” that was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Andre Dubus III. Earlier in the day, she held an hourlong question-and-answer session with 100 English and Theater Arts students at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center, touching on subjects from how she prepares for roles to how she got her start as an actress. By turns witty, thoughtful and quick, she held her audience rapt as she discussed her career. Dubus, a New York Times bestselling author, wanted to know how she is able to disappear into her roles. “Acting is a very mysterious craft,” Streep said. “The (actors) I admire, I have no idea how they achieve what they do. When you are working with them there’s a seamless exchange of thought, emotion and physicality. Today, the Weinstein Company has released a first theatrical trailer for “The Giver”. Lois Lowry’s classic story — one of the first modern dystopic tales written explicitly for a younger audience — takes place in a future where all of the unpleasant, messy aspects of life (war, pain, difference, feelings in general) have been wiped away. Last night on his post-Oscars show, Jimmy Kimmel premiered what fans have been looking for all awards season: parody movie trailers based on classic viral videos. Among them is “Bitman Begins”, “based” on “Charlie Bit My Finger, and starring Chris and Liam Hemsworth as well as Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks! Short but funny, especially Streep’s “subtle” dialogue. Many thanks to Beatrice for bringing this to my attention: During her visit in France to promote “August: Osage County”, Meryl Streep attended the French television show 20h Week-End to talk about the film and the Oscars. It’s a pretty bumpy interview, maybe because of its editing and the translation – and I still don’t understand the lenghty Maria Callas clip. But see for yourself. Lots of updates today! Let’s start with the videos first. A clip of Meryl’s appearance at the Critics Choice – presenting the Best Director award to Alfonso Cuaron as well as the Best Actress segment – have been added, alongside a red carpet interview by Entertainment Tonight, in which she states her disappointment that Emma Thompson didn’t make the cut at the Oscar nominations. Then, ITV has aired an interview with Meryl on their programme “Lorraine”. This was taped back in November when Meryl was shooting “Into the Woods”, about she speaks (and sings) in this segment. Here’s a surprise for today. Although Meryl’s interview with Ellen has been taped yesterday but won’t air until Monday, Ellen’s website has posted three preview clips (which, together, run for 10 minutes, so that I call a preview!) from the interview. Meryl talks about her 18th Oscar nomination and the letter she wrote to Emma Thompson after finding out she was not nominated. She also talks about doing a safari after wrapping “The Giver” in South Africa last December. Then, Ellen lets Meryl read various text passages in different characters. So in case you’ve ever dreamed of Meryl reading a traffic report while giving birth, here you go. The preview clips have been combined to one (the middle one is not in the best quality but will be edited later) and can be found in the video archive.
