On Monday night, Viola Davis actress was honored at the 48th Chaplin Award Gala for her decades-long career in Hollywood, and there to support her were pals Meryl Streep and Jessica Chastain. The celebration for Davis included celebrity speakers and highlights from her films over the years. At the end of the evening, she was presented with the Chaplin Award, which goes to an actor or filmmaker who has made outstanding contributions to cinema and “whose work embodies Charles Spencer Chaplin’s qualities of realism, diversity, and courage,” per the award’s website. In a first look video clip by Entertainment Weekly, Sienna Miller informs Meryl Streep that she is the last humpback whale on Earth. Miller and Streep’s debut episode, “2046,” presents an abysmal hereafter where animals, including tigers and orangutans, are extinct. Miller portrays Rebecca, an archivist who studies the extinctions and works to preserve the animals’ memories, while Streep – without giving too much away – is not merely a whale per se, but Rebecca’s late mother, Eve. While an email from Burns containing an enticing P.S. that Streep would play her mother was enough for Miller to say yes to the project script unseen, it helped that the source material centered on a topic that she already cares deeply about. “When you’re dealing with such an enormous crisis of climate and also climate change denial – especially having lived in America throughout the last presidential reign, and having seen the documentaries, many of which Scott was involved with – there’s a lot that can be said from watching documentaries and dealing with hard facts,” Miller tells EW. “Extrapolations” debuts March 17 on Apple TV+ with three episodes, followed by weekly episodes on Fridays until April 21. Hulu has released a first teaser trailer for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building”, which gives us a first look at Meryl Streep’s character. Here’s additional info courtesy Vulture, minus the season two spoilers: The season three teaser, newly released by Hulu, suggests a possible answer to that last question. Meryl Streep, who was announced as part of the new season’s cast back in January, stars in the teaser, and appears to be part of the play that Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Paul Rudd are putting on. This makes her a compelling suspect. The teaser will be aired on television during tonight’s Academy Awards broadcast. A premiere date for the series has not yet been set.

Apple TV+ today released the trailer for the highly-anticipated, star-studded, climate change-themed limited series “Extrapolations” featuring Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller and an all-star cast. The eight-episode series from writer-director-exec producer Scott Z. Burns premieres globally over the streamer with the first three episodes on March 17, followed by a new streaming episode every Friday through April 21. While public appearances have become a rare treat since the pandemic, Meryl Streep has attended not one but two New York functions this week. On Monday, she honored author John Guare’s at 42nd Street’s “A Celebration to John Guare”. And on Thursday, she was among the many guests at the Broadway opening night of “Pictures from Home”, a new play starring Danny Burstein, Zoë Wanamaker and Nathan Lane. We are blessed this week with news on Meryl Streep’s upcoming productions with not only “Only Murders in the Building”, but also a first look at “Extrapolations”, which will premiere on AppleTV+ on March 17, 2023. While there haven’t been any news on the 8-part miniseries since its press release in November 2021, I was wondering if Meryl was really involved with the project after all. With today’s first look images and synopsis, I’m happily proven wrong. So far, we know that Meryl’s character is named Eve Shearer and that she plays Sienna Miller’s mother. The series boasts a powerhouse cast including Tobey Maguire, Forest Whitaker, Diane Lane, Kit Harrington, Marion Cotillard, Daveed Diggs, Edward Norton, Gemma Chan, David Schwimmer and Matthew Rhys. What better way to start the new year with a new project for Meryl Streep, who is checking into “Only Murders in the Building”. As The Hollywood Reporter writes, Streep will appear in the third season of Hulu’s murder-mystery comedy. Star Selena Gomez revealed Streep’s casting in an Instagram post Tuesday. Details of Streep’s role – and how extensive it may be – are being kept under wraps for now. She joins a cast led by Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short; Paul Rudd – who had a cameo in the second-season finale – and former Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams are also joining the cast, which also includes Tina Fey, Vanessa Aspillaga, Adina Verson, Ryan Broussard and Andrea Martin. Hulu has said the show is its most popular original comedy; it spent nine weeks on Nielsen’s top 10 streaming series chart in 2022, drawing 3.67 billion minutes of viewing time in that span. On this day 40 years ago, Universal Pictures released the film that would cement Meryl Streep’s status as one of the greatest living actresses, in a harrowing film about the effects of the Holocaust on people’s sanity and lives. The status remains, and so does the brilliance of her Academy Award winning peformance in “Sophie’s Choice”.

Imagine, only for a moment, if we would talk about Meryl Streep today had she retired her film career in 1982. The majority of us wasn’t born yet – and Streep had done only seven films in a rather short period on film. But for those she had amassed three Academy Award nominations and one win, in three Best Picture nominations with two wins, a breakout role on tv with an Emmy win and a splashy part in Woody Allen’s “Manhattan”. Of the many talented new stars of the early 1980’s, Streep was “the one”. But it wasn’t until “Sophie’s Choice” that audiences and critics started labeling her “the greatest”. Had it been her last film, I’m sure we would still talk about this rather short career to this day, but probably within a much smaller group of film afficionados. Fortunately for us, Meryl Streep has entertained us with illustrious characters to this day. And 40 years after its release, “Sophie’s Choice” still reminds us that here is an actress that can do everything.

Today 40 years ago, „Still of the Night“ released US theaters. Sandwiched between two of Meryl Streep’s greatest performances in the early 1980s, „Still of the Night“ is an often-forgotten Hitchcock hommage that not even its star herself remembers fondly. Helmed by Robert Benton, who directed Streep to her first Academy Award, it gave her probably the most thankless part of her career – the mysterious blonde.

In 1981, Meryl Streep had reached a first peak in her fairly young career. She was proclaimed „Star of the ‚80s“ by Newsweek and „Magic Meryl“ by Time Magazine a year afer winning her first Academy Award for „Kramer vs. Kramer“, her second consecutive nomination after „The Deer Hunter“. Her first leading role in „The French Lieutenant’s Woman“ won her a third nomintion in three years, as well as her second Golden Globe and a BAFTA from the British Academy. „Sophie’s Choice“ was on the horizon for a theatrical release later that year and she was already working with Mike Nichols on „Silkwood“ in Texas. Meanwhile, Benton was looking for a follow-up project to „Kramer“. He wrote a script called „Stab“ back in 1975, but left it in the drawers to first direct „The Late Show“, and then wait some more to direct „Kramer“. „You find yourself in a trap if you do the thing that people expect you to,“ he told The New York Times for the release of „Still of the Night“. „It seemed to me that I should go about as far away from „Kramer“ as I could with my next film.“ He found the missing link in Meryl Streep to finally revive the story of a entangled by the mistress of his murdered patient – a mysterious, cool blonde, who may have killed her lover, and maybe others as well.

Streep accepted the role for a number of reasons – to work with Benton and cinematographer Néstor Almendros again, but also for having the chance to work in New York, where her young family was based. „I wanted to work with [Benton] again. It was shot in New York. I rolled out of bed to go to work. I was with my baby more than I had ever been. I didn’t have to work every day,” she told Gene Siskel in 1982. She also, once again, helpled Benton with the right dialogue for Brooke, as she did with Joanna Kramer, as Benton recalls, „’When she got back from doing ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman,’ we began working together, one or two days a week, on the character. She made up a great deal of the background story, the part about her father.”

On October 13, 2022, Meryl Streep accepted the Alumnae/i Association of Vassar College (AAVC) Distinguished Achievement Award. According to a lenghty article published on the Vassar website, her movie-star charisma was immediately evident, but when Streep addressed the 1,500 members of the Vassar community—including fellow members of the class of ’71 – the three-time Academy Award winner didn’t talk much about the movies. She chose instead to tell her audience about how Vassar had shaped her life, setting her on a path of social awareness and activism. “One value of a Vassar education is that it kind of dooms you to a life of awareness …”Streep said. “Once you know how to search out and credit the facts around certain problems, you are called on by your conscience to act on them.
