A fourth theatrical trailer – this time featuring quotes from the critical praise, a television spot and the official b-roll for “Suffragette” have been released. On October 9 at 10.35 pm., Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan will join Nicole Kidman on Graham Norton’s couch to promote the theatrical release of “Suffragette”. This will be Meryl’s second visit to the Graham Norton Show after appearing earlier this year to promote “Into the Woods”. “Suffragette” will also be opening the Savannah Film Festival, which kicks off Saturday, October 24. Meryl’s still at the Telluride Film Festival after Friday’s first showing of “Suffragette”. On Saturday, a second screening for the film took place, which was attended by Streep, director Sarah Gavron, writer Abi Morgan, and producers Alison Owen and Faye Ward. Also that day, Gavron and Streep joined director Tom McCarthy, actress Rachel McAdams, actor Geza Rohrig and director Laszlo Nemes for a seminar at Elks Park. According to IndieWire, Meryl Streep has attended the first showing of Fox Searchlight’s “Suffragette,” in which Streep delivers a brief but potent cameo as wealthy Emmeline Pankhurst, who led scores of turn-of-the-century British women to fight for the right to vote. “We have been ridiculed and ignored,” Pankhurst cries. “Deeds and sacrifice must be the order of the day.” Carey Mulligan carries this movie as ably as she did “Far from the Madding Crowd.” She plays Maud, a 24-year-old workhorse laundry drudge who is drawn into the suffragette cause by a co-worker (the excellent Anne-Marie Duff) and local pharmacist (Helena Bonham Carter). The harshness of Maud’s daily work life (her shoulder is scarred from past burns), where the factory boss hits on the younger women, contrasts with her cozy life at home with her husband (Ben Whishaw) and young son. But as Mrs. Pankhurst and her well-to-do colleagues urge working women to join the cause as foot soldiers willing to make sacrifices, these women are beaten and harassed by police and husbands alike. Maud’s husband can’t take the neighborhood heat when his wife keeps clocking jail time. (1000 women were imprisoned during the long fight for women’s suffrage.) Today is Emmeline Pankhurst Day in the U.K. Each year, this day pays tribute to the fight for women’s suffrage (the right to vote) and equal rights for women led by activist Emmeline Pankhurst. Beginning in the early 20th century, the tireless work from Mrs. Pankhurst and the thousands of women she rallied as suffragettes had a ripple effect that reached across the globe, helping to eventually gain women equality in numerous other countries, including the U.S. In celebration of Emmeline Pankhurst Day, the official Suffragette advance one-sheet poster art of Ms. Streep, Ms. Mulligan, and Ms. Bonham Carter is being debuted. We are pleased to share this sneak peek with our readers as they remember Emmeline Pankhurst and everything she stood for. Only this talented of a cast could bring forth such a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain.

Coinciding with the #VotingMatters campaign, Focus Features has released a trailer (more of a teaser of an upcoming trailer) for director Sarah Gavron’s upcoming historical drama Suffragette starring Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson. “Suffragette” is a moving drama that will empower all who are striving for equal rights in our own day and age. The stirring story, inspired by the early-20th-century campaign by the suffragettes for the right of women to vote, centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother who comes to realize that she must fight for her dignity both at home and in her workplace. Realizing that she is not alone, she becomes an activist alongside other brave women from all walks of life. The early efforts at resistance were passive but as the women faced increasingly aggressive police action, the suffragettes become galvanized – risking their very lives to ensure that women’s rights would be recognized and respected.

Suffragette is set for release October 23rd in the States and October 30th in the UK.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Focus Features announced Friday that it will release Suffragette, a drama about the early women’s movement starring Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, in exclusive engagements on Oct. 23, 2015, with an expansion to follow. Focus is handling North American distribution of the period film, directed by Sarah Gavron from a script by Abi Morgan. The distributor has also picked up rights for Latin America, India, South Korea and most of Eastern Europe, including Russia, with Universal Pictures International managing the release in those foreign territories. Mulligan plays a wife and mother who joins up with other women activists in the early 20th century to fight for women’s rights. The cast also includes Ben Wishaw, Anne-Marie Duff and Brendan Gleeson. Ruby Films’ Alison Owen and Faye Ward are producing, with Cameron McCracken, Tessa Ross, Rose Garnet, Nik Bower, James Schamus and Teresa Moneo serving as exec producers. Suffragette is a Ruby Films production for Focus, Pathe, Film4 and the BFI in association with Ingenious Media and with the participation of Canal+ and Cine-Cinema. To celebrate International Women’s Day on Sunday 8th March 2015, Pathé is proud to release this portrait of the women behind “Suffragette” – the first feature film to tell the story of the ordinary British women at the turn of the last century who risked everything in the fight for equality and the right to vote.

Depicted in the photograph are the stars of the film Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff and Meryl Streep; the director, Sarah Gavron; the screenwriter, Abi Morgan; and the producers, Faye Ward and Alison Owen. They are joined by Helen and Laura Pankhurst, great-grand-daughter and great-great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the Suffragette movement. The photograph was taken by Brigitte Lacombe in London on 12th February 2015. The theme for International Women’s Day 2015 is ‘Make it Happen’ – the filmmakers depicted in the photograph did just that. According to the BFI (British Film Institute), in the 7 years from 2007 to 2013, the average percentage of British films released each year that were directed by women was 12%; and for films written by women the percentage was little better at 14.8%. Perhaps the small number of female voices in the industry is why no feature film has ever been made about the women who 100 years ago fought for the right to vote. Their strategy of passive resistance inspired political leaders from Gandhi to Martin Luther King. It is a story that should not be forgotten.

Meryl Streep, who plays Emmeline Pankhurst in “Suffragette”, commented: “Every daughter should know this history, every son write it on his own heart”. Sarah Gavron, director of “Suffragette”, stated: “International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women throughout the world and I am overjoyed that my film can be part of that celebration. The story of the ordinary British women who were willing to sacrifice everything in their fight for the right to vote is an inspiration to all of us in our ongoing fight for equality.” Helen Pankhurst is a Special Advisor on Gender Equality for Care International. On International Women’s Day, a number of the filmmakers will be joining Helen and Laura Pankhurst for the CARE International “Walk In Her Shoes” event – a public walk to show solidarity with women and girls worldwide who still endure inequality and injustice. The public are invited to join the start of the walk at The Scoop outside London’s City Hall at 10am on 8th March 2015.
