Meryl Streep did quite some press during her stay at the Cannes Film Festival (see following updates). Among the biggest scoop might be Deadline‘s Baz Bamigboye chat with Streep about the chances of being part of “Mamma Mia! 3”: The acting legend, honored with an Honorary Palme d’Or at an emotional presentation Tuesday night during the Cannes Film Festival’s opening ceremony the Grand Théâtre Lumière, confirmed that “of course, I want to do it,” but first she wants to hear how producer Judy Craymer has resolved the issue of how Streep’s character Donna Sheridan can return for MM3 when it was revealed during the during the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again that Donna had died. Will there be some sort of resurrection, I wondered. “I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon,” the three-time Oscar-winning star told me when I went to chat with her at the festival’s opening-night Dîner d’ Ouverture at a splendidly renovated and refurbished Palm Beach. “Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it,” she added. Her longtime agent, CAA’s Kevin Huvane, seated next to her, cautioned, “We’re optimistic about it.” And he noted Universal’s keenness to get it made. Streep regrets letting Here We Go Again slip through her fingers, appearing in it just briefly. But she had a bundle of fun on the set meeting up again with the likes of Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper.

It’s been 15 years since the theatrical release of “Mamma Mia!” in 2008 – and Vogue has consulted everyone – literally everyone involved with the film except for Julie Walters – to reflect on its filming, its release and the chances for a third film to fulfill Judy Cramer’s dream of a “Mamma Mia” trilogy. The oral history is a long read with countless new information from behind the scenes and who was considered for which parts, so head over to Vogue to read the entire article. A couple of new production stills and on-set pictures from the article have been added to the photo gallery as well.

I’m up for anything. I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there. I told Judy if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died. (Meryl Streep, Vogue, September 12, 2023)

Here’s some positive news (in its very early stages) for all “Mamma Mia!” fans out there, according to Entertainment Weekly: Judy Craymer , the producer of Mamma Mia!, both the original stage production and two subsequent films, is committed to making a third movie and even has an idea for how to do it. “It’s in its earliest stages,” Craymer told Deadline of a potential three-quel. “There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back – and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna.” Craymer also told Deadline that her ideas for a third film include ways to bring back all of the fan favorite characters, including Streep’s Donna, who was deceased in the second film, and Cher’s Ruby. Craymer did, however, also note that there’s nothing “official” yet. A representative for Universal, which produced the previous two films, also told EW that there’s nothing to share at this moment. Part of this is because anything involving more Mamma Mia! must come with the blessing of Andersson and Ulvaeus. “We want to do another movie, and they’re [being cautious],” Craymer added. “But that’s the story of the last 25 years – there’s always a sense of caution from them, and we’re all getting older now. Obviously, anything to do with the music, they have to be okay with.” The first two films, 2008’s Mamma Mia! and 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, were released ten years apart, so it could take a minute to pull all the pieces together.

Here’s an early Christmas present to you. On December 05, British ITV1 had a 90 minutes television special on “The Nation’s Favourite ABBA song”, a countdown of the Swedish group’s music hits, as voted by the British public. The programme was accompanied by interviews with Bjorn and Frida, collaborators, celebrity fans – as well as Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Julie Walters, reflecting on shooting the movie version of the musical “Mamma Mia” (Meryl’s remarks were filmed back in 2008 for “The South Bank Show”). With many thanks to the great Alvaro, a video excerpt as well as captures from the programme have been added to the site. Enjoy watching!
