As reported by the New York Times the day after the event, Isaiah Sheffer, the cultural director of the Upper West Side theater, noted that, by the calendar, this week would be the logical time to conceive a child born on New Year’s Day 2000. He jokingly advised that any couples hoping for a Y2K baby should leave and get busy. None did, so he introduced Ms. Streep. Tucking her straight blond hair behind her ears, she set down the text of William Trevor’s “Broken Homes” on the lectern and paused for silence. “I have four children,” she said, “so I’ll be staying here tonight.”
