Romeo and Juliet

June 18, 2012 · The Public Theater
Directed by: Daniel Sullivan · Literature: William Shakespeare
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Shakespeare in the Park series, a special reading of "Romeo and Juliet", featuring Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep in the title roles is held on June 18, 2012. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.
