This evening, the cast and crew of “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” – including Meryl Streep, Cher, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Christine Baranski – have all graced the blue carpet for the film’s big London premiere in London.People spoke to Cher on playing Meryl’s mother. The music icon is 72, while Streep is 69, but the age spread hardly bothers the “Believe” singer, who appears in the new Mamma Mia movie as the grandmother to Amanda Seyfried’s character. “That doesn’t make any difference,” Cher said in their exclusive Facebook live talk with the cast, moderated by PEOPLE deputy editor Dan Wakeford, about the small age gap. “I was thrilled to death, and it was so silly. It was great fun, and I love her [Meryl], so it was perfect.” Cher continued, “It was great, and she was hiding watching me sing, and I was so excited. I didn’t find out until afterwards—I would have been more nervous.” Though Cher and Streep mostly filmed on different days, they did get to spend time together on the set of the Mamma Mia sequel when Streep visited and when the duo filmed “Super Trouper.” Cher and Streep previously appeared together in the 1983 movie Silkwood. Universal Pictures eyes its promotional finale for next week’s theatrical release of “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” and they have saved the best nuggets for last. The newly-released b-roll gives us more Meryl, both behind the scenes and on stage with the complete cast. There’s also an official interview that has been used for the promotional clips we have seen so far. “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” will be released around the world next week. In the past couple of days, lots of new clips, featurettes and interviews with the cast and crew have been published, unfortunately none of them features Meryl Streep. The “big question” still seems to be if Donna is dead or alive in the sequel/prequel to 2008’s mega hit. The more important question might be just how much of a part she is in the film – after all, her name is featured on the poster and she has participated in the promotional press junket as featured in the promotional clips. I guess we have to wait and find out ourselves next week. In the meantime, I’ve compiled a list of all promotional videos, which I’m sure you’re eager to see, with or without Meryl. “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” releases theaters on July 18 in Europe and July 20 in the United States.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Lady Bird writer and director Greta Gerwig has set Little Women as her next film. And it gets even better. In talks to join the cast are Lady Bird alums Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet, Emma Stone, Florence Pugh, and Meryl Streep. No, you are not dreaming. The latest adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel hails from Sony Pictures and producer Amy Pascal. According to Variety, which first reported the news, the project will star Ronan as the protagonist Jo, Stone as Meg, Streep as Marmee, Pugh as Amy, and Chalamet as Laurie Laurence. After great success with indie films as an actor and writer, Gerwig broke out in the mainstream last year with Lady Bird, the coming-of-age story starring Ronan and Chalamet, which earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Gerwig, and Best Actress for Ronan. Edit: In a follow-up story which sounds more official than the first announcement, it has been said that Meryl is actually going to be playing Aunt March. The Los Angeles Times first broke the story, and points out that the new film will focus more on the March sisters in their young adult years, which likely means more focus on Aunt March and her very contentious selection of which sister to bring to Europe. But, really, “Meryl Streep gets to play any part she wants to play,” as Robin Swicord explained to the Times, as if that wasn’t obvious. Swicord wrote the 1994 version of Little Women and is working on the new adaptation as a producer. The film is expected to begin filming this October in Boston and could be in theaters as soon as next fall.

Universal Pictures has a nice surprise for us today. While the promotion for “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” has already started with a bunch of (more or less dreadful) tunes by the younger cast, we now have the first official featurette with a focus on Cher’s character, and – surprise, Meryl Streep’s in it as well, talking about her former and current co-star. So, nevermind if Donna Sheridan is dead or alive, Meryl has participated in the official promotion and I’m sure there’s much more to come. Even before he passed away two years ago, Michael Cimino’s overlooked films, from Heaven’s Gate to Year of the Dragon to Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, were already getting deserved re-appraisals, but there’s one towering classic in his filmography that has endured since its release forty years ago: his Vietnam War epic The Deer Hunter. While it will officially turn 40 at the end of the year, StudioCanal and Park Circus have gotten the jump on a 4K restoration, which they’ll debut in U.K. theaters, fittingly, on the fourth of July, followed by a Blu-ray release in August. Starring Christopher Walken, John Savage, John Cazale and Trump favorites low-IQ De Niro and overrated Streep, Cimino’s emotional epic depicts a patient unfolding of friendship and chaos. The trailer, as one might expect, sells it more as Rambo-style action thriller, but that can be forgiven in the name of getting a new generation in seats. There’s no word yet on a U.S. re-release, but in the meantime, see the preview below. The Deer Hunter returns to UK cinemas on July 4, followed by a Blu-ray release on August 13.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep and Chadwick Boseman are among the notable names who have signed a letter in support of gender equality. More than 150 stars have banded together with international charity ONE in the hopes of creating change. Back in March, on International Women’s Day, the organization published its fourth annual #PovertyIsSexist letter to world leaders, “demanding that they deliver powerful changes for women and girls living in extreme poverty.” And now, Winfrey, Streep, Boseman, along with a myriad of other influential figures, are lending their support by signing onto the letter. Other famous signatories from the entertainment industry include Reese Witherspoon, Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Natalie Portman, Mariska Hargitay, Mindy Kaling, Neil Patrick Harris and Yara Shahidi. “We won’t stand by while the poorest women are overlooked,” part of the letter states, expressing a dire need for “historic changes for women” in the #MeToo and Time’s Up era. The campaign has also received support from those outside of show business, including former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg, Chelsea Clinton and Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Meryl Streep will star in The Laundromat, a drama based on the Panama Papers that Steven Soderbergh will direct. Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas are also in early talks to join the production. No distribution is on board but sources say that Netflix is eyeing it. Frequent Soderbergh collaborator Scott Z Burns wrote the script, which is based on the book by Jake Bernstein titled Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation of Illicit Money Networks and the Global Elite. The Panama Papers were leaked documents that showed how Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian law firm, allowed the wealthy and the connected to funnel money illegally in and around the world. Streep’s character details are being kept in the secret but sources describe it as being the emotional throughline of the movie. Michael Sugar, Lawrence Grey, Gregory Jacobs, Soderbergh and Burns are producing. Streep is coming off an Oscar nomination for playing a real-life figure in Steven Spielberg’s drama The Post and will next appear in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. She will also appear in Mary Poppins Returns, reteaming with her Devil Wears Prada co-star, Emily Blunt. Streep is repped by CAA.
