Today, the theatrical trailer for “Hope Springs” has been released. Have a look at it in the video archive. Additionally, screencaptures from the trailer and the film’s poster have been added to the image library. Thanks to everybody for the heads-up on this!
Last week I wasn’t able to cover a “Movie of the Week” due to issues with the video archive. Since it’s all working again, this week I’m covering the 1977 mini-series “Holocaust”, for which Meryl Streep won her first Emmy Award in 1978 and had her breakthrough in America and Europe. Screencaptures from all four episodes have been added to the image library, a trailer and six clips have been added to the video archive. Here’s a new picture from “Hope Springs” with a longer synopsis (stating Meryl’s character name as Kay?): The story finds Streep married to Jones as Kay and Arnold, a devoted couple, but decades of marriage have left Kay wanting to spice things up and reconnect with her husband. When she hears of a renowned couple’s specialist (Steve Carell) in the small town of Great Hope Springs, she attempts to persuade her skeptical husband, a steadfast man of routine, to get on a plane for a week of marriage therapy. Just convincing the stubborn Arnold to go on the retreat is hard enough – the real challenge for both of them comes as they shed their bedroom hang-ups and try to re-ignite the spark that caused them to fall for each other in the first place. According to Playbill, Academy Award winners Kevin Kline and Meryl Steep – both veterans of New York Shakespeare Festival – will play the famous balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet as the Shakespeare classic’s title characters in a gala benefit staged reading June 18 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Daniel Sullivan will direct the performance that celebrates to the day The Public Theater’s 50-year anniversary of producing Shakespeare in the outdoor venue. Additional casting for the staged reading of the “tale of woe” about star-crossed lovers will be announced. This is the Public’s annual fundraising gala. The Public Theater has produced Romeo and Juliet twice before at the Delacorte (1968 and 2007). Streep, who has performed five times at the Delacorte since 1976, and Kline, who has performed nine times since 1970, will play the iconic teen-age roles for the first time in their careers, according to The Public. They last shared the Delacorte stage in a 2006 production of Mother Courage and Her Children.

A new production still for “Hope Springs” has been released and added to the image library. If you’re wondering now – it seems that the film’s title has been changed to “Hope Springs” instead of “Great Hope Springs” – let’s not hope it’s a bad omen to get rid of the “great” :-) Anyway, the new still might give more insight on the comedy side of the film. This week’s movie is Robert Altman’s farewell to radio – and his own farewell to the film industry – “A Prairie Home Companion”. This week we go a bit beyond the usual updates on a film, as I’ve uploaded Meryl’s 2006 appearance at the actual “A Prairie Home Companion”, where she performed at their Independence Day Special. You can watch her performance in two parts in the video archive. You can also find audio files of her on-stage performances in the audio section. As for the film, new quality screencaptures, promotional stills and video clips have been added to the archive. You can find production notes and my review after the cut. Movie censors in America have given movie mogul Harvey Weinstein’s controversial new film Bully a PG-13 rating after he agreed to re-edit it for younger audiences. Bosses at The Motion Picture Association of America initially slapped the documentary with a restrictive R rating, which bans young children from seeing the film without an adult. The Weinstein Company boss argued that Bully was essential viewing for kids as it raised awareness and should be shown in schools. |
A host of stars, including Justin Bieber and Meryl Streep, added their names to a petition aimed at making the censors change their minds and Weinstein subsequently announced he would release the movie, unrated, in a limited number of theatres. But he has now decided to re-edit a crucial scene, which featured expletives, to land Bully a PG-13 rating, enabling younger teenagers to see the movie. A statement from the National Association of Theatre Owners reads, “We are pleased the Weinstein Co. respected the rules and processes of the voluntary ratings system by editing and resubmitting Bully in order to receive the PG-13 rating.” The above video is a report from ABC World News on the New York screening that was hosted by Meryl.
