Two determined students at a West Coast University follow the
inspiration of their idealistic professor, Dr. Malley, and attempt to do something
important with their lives. But when the two make the bold decision to join the
battle in Afghanistan, Malley is both moved and distraught. Now, as they fight for
survival in the field, they become the string that binds together two disparate
stories on opposite sides of America. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. the charismatic
Presidential hopeful, Senator Irving, is about to give a bombshell story to a
probing TV journalist that may affect Arian and Ernest’s fates. As arguments,
memories and bullets fly, the three stories are woven ever more tightly together,
revealing how each of these Americans has a profound impact.

Matthew Michael Carnahan (screenwriter), The Times Online, October 2007
"The person who got the ball rolling was Meryl Streep. Apparently she called her
agent 50 pages into the script and said, “I’m in.” Once somebody of that calibre
becomes attached, everybody wants to know what the hell this script is. Robert
Redford makes no bones about his political views. There are going to be people
that, no matter what the movie is and what it says, they are just going to attack.
But I think the attack dogs in the US are starting to be seen for what they are."

In an earlier version of the script, all characters were having different names.
Tom Cruise's character was Vincent Minnis, Meryl Streep's was named Ursula Leachman
and Robert Redford's was Alan Wilson.
