Meryl Streep, American Film, December 1983
"I was attracted to the character. No matter what in my real life, in order to effectively
play a part or make my imagination go, I have to be presented with a certain challenge and
a character with problems. What I liked about Karen was that she wasn't Joan of Arc at all.
She was unsavory in some ways and yet she did some very good things.
Meryl Streep, More Magazine, December 2002
"My hair was bleached from 'Sophie's Choice'. Mike Nichols took us all to dinner, including
Cher, with her black hair. Mike said, 'This is it. I see the movie'. I'd made a date this
night to dye my hair brown. It was a testament to Mike's humanity that he didn't kill me the
next morning when he found this other person."

Lily Tomlin auditioned for the role of Dolly.
