Dr. Sam Rice is treating a married museum curator. When the man is killed, Sam is visited by
his dead patient's mistress and co-worker Brooke who wants him to return a watch - that was
left at her home - to the patient's wife. Sam is immediately attracted to the cool, aloof

Meryl Streep, Entertainment Weekly, March 2000
"I didn't know what I was doing in that. Again, I had no idea who my character was. I hate noir.
It's not about playing a person, but a represenation, usually of the girl. Kim Basinger in "L.A.
Confidential" was the closest recently - that was a person. The ones that are just seen through
mystery and smoke - I'm not interested in them."

Like in "Kramer vs. Kramer", Meryl rewrote some parts of her dialogue.

The working title in post-production was "Stab".
