The Academy Museum Gala, which had been postponed last month in the wake of Hamas’ attack on Israel, has been rescheduled for December 3. According to Deadline, the annual fundraiser, which this year will bestow honors on Meryl Streep, Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey and Sofia Coppola, was originally scheduled for October 28. After the attack on Israel, gala organizers first canceled the pre-event red carpet then eventually postponed the entire event “out of respect for the devastating conflict and loss of life happening overseas,” they said at the time. The event is now moving forward with the now-escalated Israel-Hamas war top of mind, we hear. The gala aims to raise funds to support museum exhibitions, education initiatives, and public programming including screenings, K-12 programs, and access initiatives in service of the general public and the Los Angeles community.
Congratulations to Meryl Streep for receiving her – hold your breath, seventh Grammy nomination – for her narration of the audiobook “Big Tree”, based on Brian Selznick’s novel. The fate of all life on Earth may depend on the bravery of two little sibling seeds, Louise and Merwin, as they try to save the world while searching for a safe place to grow. But when a fire forces them to leave their mama tree prematurely, they find themselves catapulted into the unknown, far from home. Alone and unprepared, they must use their wits and imagination to navigate a dangerous world – filled with dinosaurs, meteors, and volcanoes – and the fear of never finding a safe place to grow up. Throughout her career, Meryl Streep has received Grammy nominations for narrating the children’s albums “The Velveteen Rabbit”, “The Tale Of Peter Rabbit”, “The Tailor Of Gloucester”, “The One And Only Shrek” and “Charlotte’s Web” as well as for her participation on the “Mamma Mia!” soundtrack. She has yet to win her first Grammy, so let’s check back when the award is handed out February 04, 2024. Many thanks to Glenn for the heads-up.

The star-studded Hollywood fund-raiser, which had already been complicated by the actors’ strike, was to have honored Meryl Streep and others on Saturday. According to The New York Times, it’s hard not to see the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’s attempt to put on this year’s gala – a glamorous party that raises more than $10 million for the museum and burnishes its image by drawing Hollywood A-listers – as anything but ill-fated. First the Hollywood strikes complicated efforts to hold the party, since striking actors are barred from promoting films and few would want to rub elbows socially with executives from the big studios that they are on strike against. That difficulty was ironed out after studio executives, who are among the museum’s biggest financial supporters, agreed not to come and union officials said actors could attend as long as they did not promote films. Then the Israel-Hamas war cast a shadow over the festivities, which had been scheduled for Saturday night. First the museum announced that the red carpet – where stars parade in their finery for photographers before going in – would be canceled. Then, on Thursday, the museum announced that the gala would be postponed. “Out of respect for the devastating conflict and loss of life happening overseas, we have made the decision to postpone the Academy Museum gala this Saturday,” the museum said in a statement on Thursday evening. “We look forward to rescheduling at a later date. We thank everybody deeply for their support.” The gala was to have honored Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Michael B. Jordan and Sofia Coppola. The chairs of the gala, which is raising money for exhibitions, education and public programs, are the director Ava DuVernay, the actor Halle Berry, the producer Ryan Murphy and the producer Eric Esrailian, a physician and a trustee. The museum through a spokeswoman said it had no further comment.
Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Michael B. Jordan, and Sofia Coppola have been named this year’s honorees for the Academy Museum Gala to be held on October 14. As a fundraiser, the event has been greenlit to move forward by WGA and SAG-AFTRA. The evening will help raise vital funds to support the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ exhibitions, education initiatives, and public programming, including screenings, K-12 programs, and access initiatives in service of the general public and the local community of Los Angeles. Supported by Rolex, the official watch partner and founding supporter of the Academy Museum, the Gala is being co-chaired by Academy Award-nominated director Ava DuVernay, Academy Museum Trustee, physician, producer, philanthropist, and entrepreneur Dr. Eric Esrailian, Academy Award-winning actor and Academy Museum supporter Halle Berry, and Academy Museum Trustee and screenwriter, director, producer Ryan Murphy.

This year’s glamorous event will mark the two year anniversary of the Academy’s Museum Of Motion Pictures.
Meryl Streep has been announced the recipient of the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, a prestigious annual prize which this year reaches its 43rd edition. In recent decades, Streep has become, quite simply, the actress, a figure of worldwide prestige, especially on the big screen. “Over five decades, Meryl Streep has developed a brilliant career, stringing together performances in which she gives life to rich and complex female characters, which invite reflection and the formation of the viewer’s critical spirit,” said the jury of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, named after Spain’s heir to the throne, Princess Leonor, who will hand out the prizes to winners in the arts, sciences, humanities, and public affairs. The jurors also highlighted Streep’s“ honesty and responsibility in the choice of her works, in the service of inspiring and exemplary narratives,” as well as her commitment to being “a tireless activist for equality.” Meryl Streep has repsonded to the announcement, hinting an appearance in October to receive it in person:
I am very honored to receive this prestigious prize from one of the most deeply gifted countries and cultures in the world. My sincere thanks to Their Majesties and Her Royal Highness and I very much look forward to meeting them in October, and to spending time in their beautiful country.

On October 13, 2022, Meryl Streep accepted the Alumnae/i Association of Vassar College (AAVC) Distinguished Achievement Award. According to a lenghty article published on the Vassar website, her movie-star charisma was immediately evident, but when Streep addressed the 1,500 members of the Vassar community—including fellow members of the class of ’71 – the three-time Academy Award winner didn’t talk much about the movies. She chose instead to tell her audience about how Vassar had shaped her life, setting her on a path of social awareness and activism. “One value of a Vassar education is that it kind of dooms you to a life of awareness …”Streep said. “Once you know how to search out and credit the facts around certain problems, you are called on by your conscience to act on them. The Vassar conscience rings a bell in your head; it’s a call to action in your heart.” Pictures from the event have been added to the photo gallery – with credit to Vassar College / Karl Rabe, the complete article can be read over here.
