Throughout the next weeks, the image libraries will be updated with pictures of Meryl’s more recent public appearances. There are many pictures waiting to be uploaded, so let’s start with 2012. Over 600 additional pictures have been added, including all of the awards shows that Meryl has attended this year – the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, BAFTA and, of course, the Academy Awards. There are also more pictures from various premieres, the Berlin Film Festival and benefits like “A Magical Evening”. To launch all last added pictures, simply click the previews below. 2011 will be covered in the next update.
One of the rare finds in Meryl’s career is the 1981 documentary “Kiss Me, Petruchio”, a behind-the-scenes look at the Shakespeare in the Park production of “The Taming of the Shrew” in 1978, starring Raul Julia and Meryl Streep. As I’m sure many are interested in seeing more from this programme, a lenghty excerpt has been added to the video archive. New screencaptures in better quality (although quality is quite a word for an old 1980s tape) have been added to the image library as well.
Watching the documentary on “The Taming of the Shrew” reminds you of two things – first, what a great institution the Public Theater and its annual Shakespeare in the Park is. It opens its doors for the public to watch classic theater for free, boasting performances and plays that are still being mentioned for their brilliance decaded later. And secondly it shows why Meryl has been hailed for her stage work early on. Here, at 29 years old (the play was performed in 1978) she is energetic and intelligent in her interview – and a force of nature on the stage.
The career sections for Meryl’s voice work and documentaries have been updated. Her voice work provides a very interesting base to learn more about the causes close to her heart, from women’s rights to organic food and nature. New audio clips from various voice work productions have been added, including The Colors of Hope (1985), Arctic Refuge: A Vanishing Wilderness (1991), Beyond Organic: The Visions of Fairview Gardens (2000), Ginevra’s Story (2001) and The Cutting Tradition (2009). Addtionally, background information, images and shopping links for many other productions have been updated. Many thanks to Alvaro, who has contributed many of these rare finds.
Unfortunately, Meryl has been a no-show at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. As mentioned by hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in their opening speech, “Meryl Streep is not here tonight. She she has the flu. And I hear she’s amazing in it”. The Golden Globe for Best Actress Drama went to Jennifer Lawrence. The presentation by Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig was beyond funny and made up for Meryl (or Mariel) not being there. The Best Actress segment can be watched in the video archive.
The Golden Globes will be handed out tonight and Simply Streep will have live coverage of the ceremony with pictures and video updates throughout. Meryl Streep is nominated as Best Actress in a Comedy or Muscial for “Hope Springs” and will be a presenter as well, most probably for Best Actor in a Drama. I personally don’t think she will win tonight, since co-nominee Jennifer Lawrence is a current frontrunner for the Globe as well as the Oscar, but I’m sure her presenting of an award will make up for this. To celebrate tonight’s Golden Globes, a new flipbook has been created with Meryl’s past Globe appearances.
If you can’t wait for the ceremony to start, why not have a look at Meryl’s past segments at the Golden Globes. Below you can re-watch her appearances since her first in 1989 to the most recent Golden Globe win in 2012 for “The Iron Lady”. Do you have a favorite for tonight? Share you predictions and comments on this years’ Golden Globes in the comments.
A few months ago, reports surfaced of Meryl’s involvement, among many other actors, in a documentary on the 100th Anniversary of Universal Studios. The film has been now released, featuring many scenes and remarks on one the studios greatest films, inlcuding Back to the Future, E.T., Schindlers List, Scarface, Jaws, American Graffiti, Coal Miner’s Daughter, The Sting and Out of Africa. Excerpts from the documentary, including Meryl’s remarks on the film have been added to the video archive.
Meryl Streep has won the 2013 People’s Choice Award as Movie Icon. She shared the category with Emma Thompson, Maggie Smith, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon. She was also nominated in the Best Dramatic Movie Actess category, for which Emma Watson was voted. As expected, Meryl didn’t attend the ceremony and in case I didn’t miss it, the Movie Icon category wasn’t even broadcast (if it was, let me know :-), but a clip from the Dramatic Actress segment has been added to the video archive.
George Clooney and Meryl Streep will be among the presenters at Sunday night’s 70th annual Golden Globe Awards. In addition, the presenters include: Kerry Washington, Nathan Fillion, Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Kristen Wiig, Jeremy Renner, Amanda Seyfried and Will Ferrell. Smash‘s Debra Messing is also reportedly set to take the stage as well, according to a tweet from the Today show. Meryl is nominated herself in the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category for “Hope Springs”, so no matter if she wins or not, the stage will be hers. Hosted by comediennes Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the ceremony airs this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
“A Fierce Green Fire: The Battle For a Living Planet” is the first big-picture exploration of the environmental movement – grassroots and global activism spanning fifty years from conservation to climate change. Narrated by Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Isabel Allende, Ashley Judd and Van Jones, the film tells vivid stories about people fighting – and succeeding – against enormous odds.
A Fierce Green Fire can educate and inspire new generations; energize activists; give purpose to the movement; even shape its identity going forward. We’re committed to spending two years working with groups large and small – not just doing screenings and sales to their members and partners, but using the film as a tool for campaigning around an array of issues. Already we are discussing plans with Lois Gibbs’ CHEJ; the Sierra Club and its chapters; NRDC; 350.org; the National Wildlife Federation, which reaches into the heartland; local groups fighting fracking in Pennsylvania and New York; Eradicating Ecocide, a campaign to make environmental damage an international crime; Waterkeeper Alliance and International Rivers; Greenpeace and Oregon Wild; Occupy groups and Imazon in Brazil; food and water activists… the list goes on.
Lots of additional images from public appearances in 2012 have been added to complete this year’s galleries. The new addtions include mostly the early year’s promotion for “The Iron Lady”, including the London and Paris premieres and the Berlin Film Festival. Then, there’s more from the BAFTAs and Academy Awards as well as the “Hope Springs” premiere up to the more recent Kennedy Center Honors. Click the previews below to launch all latest additions.
Also added have been three new flipbooks (with more in the works). The first focuses on Considered Projects – the films that Meryl planned to do or was considered for (I’m sure there’ll be some surprises). Then, two flipbooks on Meryl’s singing – on film and in real life. Enjoy – and Happy New Year!
