Tribeca TV Festival – Tracey Ullman’s Show
September 21, 2018  ·  New York, USA

After the third-season premiere of “Tracey Ullman’s Show”, Ullman and Meryl Streep swapped memories and stories of their careers and friendship during a discussion at the Tribeca TV Festival on Saturday. The sketch comedy series was something Ullman described a way for her to laugh again following her husband’s passing five years ago. “I had to cheer myself up again,” she told Streep during a talkback after the screening. Streep was also reflective of her friendship with Ullman, recalling meeting her at age 32, believing she had made a new friend her own age. When Streep discovered that Ullman was in actuality 10 years her junior, they admitted, it became a running joke between them. The pair first worked together on Plenty in 1983 and have since acted together in Into the Woods. “Who are you?” Streep asked, after Ullman acknowledged she was being interviewed by her friend. “You’re family to me,” she said. Though they have been friends for years, even Streep learned some new things about Ullman at the event, such as discovering Ullman had gotten married in Los Angeles in 1983. “You would’ve been invited,” Ullman said. “You would have been the maid of honor or something.”

When asked if Streep would ever appear on Tracey Ullman’s Show, Ullman told The Hollywood Reporter, “If she wanted to, sure,” but added “We’re just mums when we’re together. All our kids know us and they tell us to shut up.” Ullman denied ever doing an impersonation of Streep. “She talks like she’s from 1942,” she said with a laugh, then added, “Hey peanut girl” and “Herd of turtles,” two of her favorite Streep phrases. The pair continued to poke fun at each other throughout the discussion, referring to themselves as No. 1 and No. 2. “I’m number one,” Streep said after looking at her microphone, presumably for the benefit of a sound guy. “Am I number two?” Ullman responded, further quipping, “It’s always gonna be that way, guys. She’s made sure. [It] has to be about her! It’s my night!” The two then got into a play fight and Ullman pretended to storm offstage, only to return. “We’re acting. Acting!” Streep even recalled some facts she found on Wikipedia, including one stating that Ullman is the first British woman to be offered her own sketch comedy show that airs in both the U.K. and the U.S. “You are the richest female comedian and actor in England,” Streep said, to which Ullman jabbed, “According to what, The Daily Mail?” The pair also discussed the nature of fame and how it affects their daily lives. “The least fun part of what I do is being Meryl Streep, or whatever that thing is,” Streep said. “It’s tough for you sometimes,” Ullman said. “Some people see me on the street and they say, ‘I’ve got a cousin like you, she’s crazy too. She should have a show. She’s really funny too.’ Why doesn’t she have a show then? They see you, and people start fainting and stuff. Sometimes I have to do security.”
