Metropolitan Arts Center: Meryl and the MAC
August 18, 2007  ·  Old Museum Arts Centre, Belfast

Meryl Streep was in Belfast, August 18, 2007, to help raise funds for the new Metropolitan Arts Centre (MAC). In the programme, entitled Meryl and the MAC, the actress talks about her early career in films, her ambitions for the future and includes clips from some of her most famous big screen roles. During her visit, Meryl took part in a question and answer session at the Old Museum Arts Centre with a studio audience and tells how she was once too frightened to visit Belfast and how her Donegal ancestry helped her master the accent for one of her roles. In the programme, Meryl talks about how she prepares for roles, how she chooses which scripts to accept and her ambition to one day sit in the director’s chair. The programme also follows the screen legend, who has starred in blockbusters including The Deer Hunter, The Devil Wears Prada and Dancing at Lughnasa, to the gala fund-raising event where she was guest of honour. BBC Radio Ulster’s Wendy Austin puts the questions to Meryl during the Q&A session, while reporter Maggie Taggart introduces the documentary and takes a tour of the current Old Museum Arts Centre which will move to a new site in the Cathedral Quarter which is planned to open in 2011.
