Scenic Hudson works to protect and restore the Hudson River and its majestic landscape as an irreplaceable national treasure and a vital resource for residents and visitors. A crusader for the valley since 1963, Scenic Hudson is credited with saving fabled Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project and launching the modern grass-roots environmental movement. Today with over 25,000 ardent supporters, they are the largest environmental group focused on the Hudson River Valley. Their team of experts combines land acquisition, support for agriculture, citizen-based advocacy and sophisticated planning tools to create environmentally healthy communities, champion smart economic growth, open up riverfronts to the public and preserve the valley’s inspiring beauty and natural resources.
Meryl Streep has spoken at several Scenic Hudson gatherings on the need to stop the proposed construction of the St. Lawrence Cement plant, mine and riverfront transport facility in the City of Hudson and Town of Greenport in Columbia County, New York. Meryl has further helped raise funds for the Hudson Valley Preservation Coalition and kick off the new “Stop the Plant” poster campaign.
Scenic Hudson has a 40-year track record of getting the job done. The proposed St. Lawrence Cement plant is a huge threat, so I’m thankful that Scenic Hudson is stepping forward with extraordinary expertise and leadership. With support from citizens, they will win this fight and remain a powerhouse in shaping a bright future for our region.
