2015 saw the first ever Women in the World Summit in London. Meryl Streep graced the stage as part of the panel speaking about Suffragette alongside Sarah Gavron (director) and Alison Owens (producer). Meryl plays the iconic role of Emmeline Pankhurst in the film and told the audience all about her favourite aspects of the iconic woman she played: “She always stood on the balls of her feet, ready to fly or to deliver a speech.” Sarah Gavron, director of Suffragette, made a jovial dig that when first casting for the the film “male actors’ agents would complain the male roles weren’t big enough.” Alison Owen and Meryl had differing answers when asked “what would the Suffragettes think of the changes we’ve made in the last one hundred years?” but in the end they both decided that ultimately there still a way to go for total gender equality.
